THE greatest football rivalry?

Please ignore if this doesn't interest you or has been done recently....
I propose that the greatest football rivalry isn't necessarily one involving most fans - it's the DEPTH of the rivalry I'm asking about - and I'm not talking either about hooligans because often that isn't about the football.
So what is THE THE biggest most passionate rivalry and which have you experienced?
Have you been to a game and been surprised by the depth of the rivalry?
For me:
WHU and Spurs is perhaps a given - I've experienced that home and away ...
Watford v Luton - blimey they hate each other.
Villa v Birmingham - another strong one.
Do you have a view? Man U v Leeds/Liverpool? The Milan derby? Celtic v Rangers? Galatasaray v Fenerbahce is dynamite. Some of these South American derbies are massive too. Some non-league rivalries are very intense even with just a couple of thousand (or less) at the game ...

When I was a nipper my grandfather used to talk about Millwall & recount incidents between the supporters going back to 1922. When I was a bit older me & my mates used to roam all over the place during school holidays & my Mum would get livid with me if she found out we had been south of the river, so prejudice against Millwall was ingrained from an early age. Sounds a bit silly today but was how it was growing up.
I witnessed a lot of 'action' when I was on the terraces between '67 & '81 but nothing compared to the sheer hatred & viciousness going to the old Den & it's surroundings, & May '72 topped the lot.
It was always Millwall. I always considered Tottenham as kindergarten stuff by comparison.

if Zamalek vs Al Ahly in Egypt has not been mentioned it certainly deserves a mention as it has over the years produced a few heated moments.

not the greatest rivalry but the most friendliest one is west ham orient
i know it was a long time ago since they played but i went to both upton park and brisbane rd the fans all together in the same sections chatting away
anyone else know of any other friendly rivalries

For another surreal one, rather than 'greatest', didn't realise until last year that at one point until recently Wrexham vs Chester City was apparently the last 'bubble' match in the whole league pyramid.
Galatasary v Fernabache?....two of the Izmir clubs hate each other far more. Seen fans of Gala and Fernabache wandering around each other's city hotbeds, on way more than the occasional time, with no hassle whatsoever...wouldn't happen with a number of the other rivalries, even on the non match days.

This Millwall were scabs stuff - I've heard similar stories for Southampton and Portsmouth; Sunderland and Newcastle and a fewe other rivalries...i do wonder if it's not just an urban myth. Still think they're cunts by the way

I'd say the greatest rivalry I've encountered pre-dates the football itself.
Whilst they might have memorably scabbed during the General Strike, I understand the workers at Millwall Ironworks were renowned for scabbing before either them or us had a football team.
My great grandad was a West Ham youth player. And I believe his father before him could recount tales (first hand) from various ironworks strikes and scabbing by those from a certain ironworks in Millwall.
Enough said.
